It was also popular to put a candle in the neck of the empty bottle and let the melted wax run down the bottle's sides when you lit the candle.  If you used different colors of candles over time, the result was a fairly decorative-looking item by the standards of the time.  I may still have mine at the bottom of one of many moving boxes that haven't been unpacked in decades.  It's been even longer than that since I last tasted Mateus.

wax coated bottles like that were popular in the late 90's early 00's too. there were candles that melted in various colors so that you could achieve the look quicker. i had some and tried it with various bottles.

I used to love going to loud boisterous concerts... someone asked me recently if there was any concert I wanted to see back in the day and never got around to... the answer I gave was... I saw almost everything I wanted to see... (the tickets used to be reasonably priced) after college I had a friend who did PR for a big firm that handled tours and I was lucky enough to get backstage passes to many... these days I prefer smaller venues (like Royal Albert Hall)...  and well going out for a nice dinner before or after...But I have my memories

If you couldn't get to a concert there was always a record player. My first one was a Dansette Apollo DRP 10

I was thinking about those candles melted on the bottle in different colors too... had a couple on the lanai... mine are lost to time when I moved from Honolulu to London.

One up from the candle in a Mateus Rose bottle was the raffia -covered chianti bottle made into a table lamp.

Interesting how compact and self-contained those items were!  Stereo versions had detachable speakers.  For many, those units were "the life of the party".

This is from the time flies file... it's hard to believe it's been 30 years last month since the Northridge earthquake in LA... I was literally thrown out of bed at about 4:30 in the morning the a 6.7 quake hit... lots of damage and about 50'ish deaths... one of the things I always think about from it  is the Bullock's department store in Northridge... really cool building built I 1971... ultimately torn down after the quake... to much damage to restore...

Seems like Bullock's was one of the premier west coast full dept stores of that time.  Later to become, if it was not already, a unit of The May Company portfolio of regional dept stores.  That was one big quake!

Big and bold: The 1958 Mercury Monterey epitomized the flamboyant styling of the late 1950s, with its chrome-laden exterior and sweeping lines.

The fins on the cars in the late fifties were so cool.  They seemed aerodynamic, but mostly they just looked sleek and modern.

Then Buick came along with the B-58 1958s and took the Chrome King Crown for GM.

The award for "Best Done Fins" would go to the 1962 Cadillacs, if I was awarding it.  Runner-up would be the 1960 Chryslers.

Not to mention the "dog" windshield which looked aerodynamic but actually distorted your vision.

That "dog-leg" was a styling trick to make the windshields look shorter with a lower top line for more "sleekness", it seems.  Those that did it got hammered for it in the ads by those that did not, as a "knee-knocker" hurting ease of entry and exit.  Looked neat, though.

We had a portable one with detachable speakers. The part with the turntable folded up and in like a Murphy bed, and the speakers swiveled inward over it. The speakers had a hook mechanism to secure them together. Not sure where my father got it, probably from his friend the liquidator.

My parents always started the day with a cup of tea in bed, though it was sometimes a matter of contention as to whose turn it was to get up and make it. They eventually solved the problem with a Goblin 'Teasmade'.

The baker used to deliver 2-3 times a week, as did the grocer and butcher. all of them used Morris J type vans

I've been feeling very nostalgic about my old life in LA... I'm going out to work for a couple of days fairly soon... maybe getting stuck in rush hour on the 405 will get it out of my system...
