^^ You've obviously never heard Shatner's cover of Elton John's Rocket Man :m0168:

The only thing worse than Shatner's singing were Pinky and Perky A lot of British kids were pleased when they finally got sent to the bacon factory.

YES!  The SEVENTIES were about COLOR.  Lots of fun colors!  IF managed correctly, some very nice combinations.  If managed haphazzardly, it showed.  I liked the brown-tone appliances, but not the Harvest Gold or similar light green.  BUT then again, much more joyful than real or imitation stainless steel of modern times.  In interiors dominated by very light shades of gray or tan, accented by white.  How boring modern times can be!

I had completely forgotten how creepy (or maybe just weird) the early Disneyland character costumes were...

It's a shame that airline passengers don't dress like that any more!  Now it's flip-flops, shorts, and other "low-rent" apparel, generally.  Plus fast food sacks!

Actually this was a publicity shot not actually shot on a 747 but a mockup using a wide lens... I agree about the dressing part... there was a time when I worked for Pan Am that you could tell the employees flying on a pass because there was a dress code.

This is what the first Pan Am 747's actually looked like... I started working a few years after they were introduced... these aircraft were a dog and pony show to work on fuller flights especially in first... don't even get me started on duty-free service.

I still have my original Crock-Pot.  It's the same model, but white instead of 1970s-80s olive green.  Even before the '70s, I'd never liked olive green, and to this day, that's still one of my least-favorite colors.  I never had a fondue set.  I like fondue, but not enough to clean up the mess afterward!

I remember in the very late 1970s/very early 1980s there was a stretch where music wasn't doing anything for me. MTV hadn't launched yet and the only place I had access to new music was television and the radio. Maybe it was the radio stations limited selections, but I didn't appreciate all the Kenny Rogers/Dolly Parton/Christopher Cross type music.

When a song like My Sharona by The Knack came out, I was in seventh heaven. Groups like Blondie made me very happy. When The Wall came out by Pink Floyd, Another Brick in the Wall made me want the entire album.

I didn't know who The Ramones or the Sex Pistols even were. Tom Snyder introduced me to The Clash. I wasn't even a teenager quite yet but I really liked music. At that young age I was already longing for the likes of Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Who, etc.

In 2024 I like music from every genre imaginable. Gregorian chant to baroque, techno trance to modernism to disco-funk, early rap to Mozart.

So from about 2005 or so, I really noticed new music all started sounding the same to me, for the most part. I thought it was a phase. It's nearly 20 years later and the phase hasn't passed.

So before I start sounding like "You kids get off my lawn!" guy, this Gen X guy will ask you please, if you can, to please listen to this video by musician Rick Beato. I listened to it a few years ago and it saved my life, so to speak. I thought I was being a jerk not liking "new" music.

This really helped me to understand things about music in general and I hope it helps you, too. This is for anyone of any age.

Well, I was in kindergarten in 1956-57, so I was around when Buddy Holly was active.  When Elvis's early hip gyrations required "fancy" camera angles, then The Beatles and those who came after them.  Here in DFW, there were AM radio stations that covered all of the genres back then.  Most were "Top 40", with C&W, a few religious, and MANY local stations (which told you who was admitted to the hospital and public school lunch menu for the day).  A few FM stations were around, but until the late 1960s, were usually "adult" easy listening music.  Then came high school band I was in.  Then college stage band and choir.

When "rap" happened, I lost interest in newer music of that sort, unless it had the orientations I grew up with.  Notably "Channel A, Channel B" stereo sound!  I liked instrumental music rather than vocals, as then I could listen to the music and "sing" in my head.

Respectfully, I do NOT like Rap.  It is just another adaptation of poetry, yes poetry, to a rhythm.  No emotion, just words.  By observation, the social demographic which popularized that genre do NOT appreciate traditional music, just like the heavy bass content (which they proudly celebrate by not understanding "speaker distortion" at such high volume levels and the lower-power amps they used to have).  When I would hear that as they might drive by in a mall parking lot, I just shook my head as I heard the bass distortion over 150 feet away.

Obviously, "popular music" has changed with younger generations.  NOT the same music as I grew up with and predates Beato's birth, so "older boomers" have different definitions of "popular music" than "younger boomers".  BTAIM  I do NOT like it when people use the term "boomers" to paint a picture with a very broad brush!

As I have aged, I've come to better appreciate 1950s jazz and 1940s Big Band.  Plus hispanic music as it tends to be very musical and beautiful in listening to it.  A unique pleasure, although I don't speak the language.  It's always light and happy, which is good.  Even with a tuba in the wind instrument ensamble.

The DFW, TX area, as the other major and minor radio markets, had their own mix of AM radio products.  Not to forget the mega-power AM stations just over the border in Mexico.  Where we first heard of Wolfman Jack and others in their first years in broadcasting.

Unfortunately, MANY of the people who paint "boomers" with a broad brush do NOT appear to understand that their brush is wwaaaayyy too wide.  Nor do they seem to care.

Mr. Beato knows much more about the theory and science of music than I care to myself.  Yet there are so many more side-issues to what came when that seems to elude him, by observation.  Side issues and dynamics which, to me, explain much of the historic nature of music and its enjoyment.

I really appreciate that you took the time to watch the video and respond, cdadbr.

I do think Beato isn't taking into consideration how incredibly personal music is to people or the many influences that factor into a person's response music, although he did touch on that.

I do tend to be a bit "clinical" in my understanding of my own responses sometimes. I do enjoy learning about music from someone with Beato's knowledge and experience, though.

I was fascinated when he demonstrated the chord changes for example. It really helps me to realize I'm not losing my mind when I don't seem to like most new music. I said earlier it was 2005...truth be known it was probably earlier for me. Mid-late 1990s I started shying away from contemporary music.

Although I'm from the Southwest, a lot of the music that developed "organically" in that region of the country wasn't introduced to me until much later. When Linda Ronstadt released her Canciones de Mi Padre in 1989, I wasn't ready for it. I am now. Definitely.

Are you familiar with the band Calexico? I already liked Indie-Rock, so this was a very cool progression for me. Some of the band members are from Tucson, AZ, like Ronstadt, so I definitely hear the influences.

I don't really have time to listen to this in its entirety right now, but the portion I did listen to made a lot of sense. I would still listen to the radio on the way home from work before I retired a few years ago, and there were still some interesting things, but a lot I just found boring. It seems like when something new catches on, a bunch of people start copying it, and then things all start to sound the same until the next innovation comes along - and sometimes that innovation is based on something earlier, but treated / combined with other things in a new way.

Noise can be interesting, done right. But I don't want a steady diet of it, and I much prefer melody and harmony - singing - as opposed to someone speaking/rhyming. The latter can be interesting if there's a good rhythm to it, but I understand so little of the lingo that it's just lost on me. My musical era is the 70s - and disco (good disco, not the crap that happened when it became popular and lost its soul.) Some people enjoyed American Bandstand back in the day, but I was more apt to switch over to Soul Train.

(and thanks for the mention of Gregorian chant. I'm not religious, but it's an interesting form of music - can be quite mesmerizing.)

In the 70s everything was crap: the music, the fashion, the interior design and the toilet mats and covers were a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. 🙁
