in my poor little town, we never had Mc Donalds - got Carroll's Drive-Ins around 1959 when I was starting junior high. unfortunately, there was no way to access Carrolls, as the school bus flew right by, and my parents didn't comprehend the concept of fast food - wow!

We were not too big on fast food at our house either... your parents probably did you an early favor.

I worked at one in high school, and remember being one of the first males to work the counter at that time.  I remember that a burger, fries and drink was 99 cents!  It was actually a great place to work.

Was it like this?... A friend of mine in college told me he and his brother got summer jobs at Mc Donald's because of this ad!

Another favorite eatery when I was a student at UCLA was Alice's Restaurant in Westwood Village... you never knew who you might see there... the food was really good too! The mural on the north side of the building became famous over the years!

If you lived in the LA area in the 70's you remember Pat Sajak and Connie Chung and Lester holt doing respectively the local news and weather

Ok here's something you don't see today. When I was in  JHS and HS, not everyone had a car. My older sister had the second car at her disposal...not me. So we hitched everywhere. We lived in Deland which was 20 miles west of Daytona Beach.  Well being in a tiny town so close the beach was not any teenagers idea of fun. We would hitch over to Daytona all the time. Then when we got there we'd hitch up and down A1A to Ormond and New Smyrna. I wouldn't do that now if you paid me. I mean we were like 14 when we started doing this. We did surf but it was lousy unless there was a hurricane or tropical storm boiling out in the Atlantic. Key West was a blast though. Back then we would hitch down there and literally sleep on the beach. The sand fleas were a pain literally but geez when you're a kid stuff like that is nothing. Now the sand flies were something completely different. What a nuisance! It was great though. Hanging with your buds out and about...nothing like it. Kids nowadays with their heads suck in video games and Iphones just don't know what it's like. Good Times!

Pan Am used to offer an Around The World excursion ticket for a flat fee and you could get on and off and travel to other destinations.... and pick up your trip when you felt like it... as a crew member we went from Los Angeles... to Honolulu... to Tokyo... to Hong Kong... to Teheran(that stop ended in the late 70's)... to Istanbul... to Frankfurt to New York and back to LA... (and the last time I did it London polar route to LA) and for me back to Honolulu since that is where I was based... it took a little over three weeks but the payoff was a month off.

I usually flew Honolulu to Auckland to Sydney and sometimes Honolulu to Tokyo and Hong Kong.... later Honolulu to London... (I always loved that trip)

@Kawika: Was that a nonstop flight?  Your Pan Am route map shows the route passing through Seattle.  Even with an intermediate stop, it seems like such a long trip would be very tiring for the crew.

It became a non-stop with the 747SP (it was a polar route flight) It was still a long flight... which meant a longer than normal layover in London (I used to know a lot of people there) and some down time in Honolulu before doing it all over again.

Noxema used to be the greatest thing if you were out in the sun for too long... it disappeared for a while...Now it made and distributed by Unilever  I think they changed the formula and now it's in a plastic jar instead of glass (I guess I'm not the only one who dropped the jar on the bathroom tile floor)... but the biggest change is it now cost about $30.00!

LOL This was a staple in my Mom's medicine cabinet along with Fletcher's Castoria, Carbolated Vaseline, Dr. Tichenor's, mecuricome, Dr. Stewart's Hematinic, Musterole, Watkins Inhalant, Vick's salve and Phillips' milk of magnesia. Yes, I do remember the original glass jars which were cobalt glass, just like the original Phillips' Milk of Magnesia bottle. Then they did the jars with the blue color fused to the outside. It would chip off. Then they went to plastic. Geez this is one of those things were science maybe isn't right all the time. Carbolated Vaseline isn't made any longer because carbolic acid is toxic. Mecuricome isn't made any longer because it contained mercury and that too is toxic. Both were on the shelves for decades before removal.

I'm amazed we are both still alive... I can't tell you how much Mercurochrome I've had applied to me over the years from skinned shins, cuts and scrapes to what has been referred to as "The Swimming Pool Incident"

Not to mention riding bikes without helmets.....standing on the seats. O and playing with lawn darts...who thought that was a good idea! Geez Louise remember the erector sets...which I loved BTW. O and that vac-u -form thing. I burned the crap out of myself with that thing. O and the thing maker that made the creepy crawly things. It is a wonder we are still alive.

Bikes without helmets and riding in the back of the pickup with the surfboards was part of every day... We had a Lawn Dart set and by some miracle no one was ever hurt... My brother and I were not all that interested in toys per se... but the vacuum thing our step brother had and  things that you put in the oven... the most dangerous thing was some wood burning thing that he had... I don't know who had the idea of letting a child play with a red-hot wood burning iron... that was a trip to the ER for him... for my brother and I it was a bicycle chase across the lawn that ended with the two of us flying over the pool and me hitting the diving board. (the pool incident I mentioned earlier)

O I forgot about Clackers. Geez really were they trying to kill and maim us for life. I know a guy that broke a finger with those things and another that chipped his teeth. I had a bit more skill but still had bruises all the time.

Speaking of lawn darts. I threw one into Danny Boone's leg intentionally. He was the neighborhood bully.

I know what you mean about toys. We got toys twice a year, Christmas and Birthdays. My best pal Bruce and I would go "exploring" everywhere. There was a golf course adjacent to our neighborhood and we would go under the fence and run around in there. We were chased out all the time. We had "the Woods" behind the neighborhood too. We would catch snakes and all kinds of crap. Water moccasins are very aggressive and territorial. We found out the hard way. Got my first tetanus shot after some exploring and stepping on a board with a rusty nail. That was fun. No ER...remember when doctors made house calls. LOL
