i was obsessed with this book as a kid. my grandparents had a little box full of book and this was one of them and basically the only one i would read, i loved it. i remember being happy that you could see it among the books in the blue's clues intro. i don't know what it was about this book in particular but it had a hold on me.

Actually, the pushbuttons were from '56-'65, with the ones pictures from approx 1963.  The "foot pedals", as pictured, were pre-1955, going all the way back several decades.

A childhood favourite, though I only ever saw it in B&W. There is an urban myth that the characters' names are double entendres but sadly Master Bates, Seaman Staines and Roger the cabin boy do not appear. Pugwash's creator successfully sued The Guardian newspaper, who claimed that he had hidden smutty jokes in the books and cartoons.

Returning to the theme of mid-century modern tat, I seem to remember that hideous oversized brandy glasses were considered essential decorative items

Well, that's the way it was for upscale bath rooms back then.  Heck, we even put "kitchen carpet" in our bathroom.  HAD to make sure no dribbles hit the floor!  Being around "germs" helps build one's immunity to them, it seems.  Just because YOU might not like them does NOT mean they were "crap".  After all, MANY of us live through all of that with no issues.

Of course you are right. It's just my personal opinion, which was only formed in retrospect. We were totally on trend: brightly colored shirts (Nyltest), blow-dried hairstyles, shoes with heels, bell-bottoms. In the disco we danced to Sweet, T-Rex, Abba...
And back then, hygiene was not a concept for us. We ate unwashed fruit from the neighbor's garden, raspberries and blackberries in the forest. And if food fell on the floor, we picked it up and continued eating, even outside. We drank water from the stream. Maybe that's why my generation (the so-called boomers) is so robust and resilient.
Adolf H. was still on many minds even after 30 years. There was graffiti with swastikas on the walls of the houses. I wasn't aware of its significance at the time. I thought it would be cool. So I tattooed one on my arm. A few years later I became a member of the socialist party and received a lot of information about the Nazi era in Germany. I converted the swastika into a cloverleaf and later a tattoo artist made me a flower out of it. See the image below.
Maybe I didn't like the 70s because I wasn't really aware of my sexuality. I had sex with boys and that was "abnormal" according to society's ideas at the time. I always had to hide and that put a lot of strain on me.
I could write a lot more. And, as already mentioned, it is my own personal opinion and does not claim to be universal.

Shades of the Seventies

If the 1960s and 1970s were about "color", 50 years later, it is about shades of light gray and white.  Inside and out.  If the walls are light gray, the trim is white.  Kitchen accents of stainless steel, too.  How BLAND!  It's easy to tell a house which has been refurbished as they ALL have that color scheme, PLUS wood floors in light gray (which is supposed to mean "weathered wood")!  Then add light gray and white brick on the outside, with the accent color being the white grout between the bricks.  Then top it all off with a darker gray roof!

One house builder got daring and painted the house dark charcoal gray.  It looked better, but it still had the architectural features which are supposed to make things look better, but add cost now and later.  A different shade of lipstick for the feral hog?

I was looking on Zillow at houses on the market locally.  EVERY one had that color scheme, new or old, inside and out.  Some actually looked pretty good that way, but then figure in the new construction with faux ornate exterior features, for $400K USD upward, some of which had been on the market for over 200 days . . . not going to take 50 years for them to wonder "What were we thinking?"

But when they get tired of that, if they keep the house that long, they'll find some helpful folk at the chain hardware store to liven things up with some color on the inside walls.  No wonder there are now so many house painting companies in the greater metro area!

I've been getting lots of email lately about "Rum cures blood sugar issues".  Most meds advise against alcohol consumption, though.

people are weird about paint. i watch a decent amount of renovation/home makeover videos and the comments will always be filled with people saying the home's value was "destroyed" because the walls were painted something other than white or gray. and it's like, paint is not permanent? if you're already dropping the hundreds of thousands it takes to buy a home now you can afford some paint if you don't like the color scheme. also a house is not all about value. it's like some people don't consider or can't comprehend the fact that the person doing these renovations is actually intending to stay in the house, that it's going to be their home, they are not planning to sell it so they don't care about it's value that way.

i largely hate "neutral" colors, i can stand gray but i hate, absolutely hate, white and any shade of beige. i have gray walls but i live in a rental, don't really have a choice. before i had my kitchen painted this bright green and my room and the bathrooms were various shades of blue. i never painted the other rooms because they were paneling, which i also hate but that's largely because i've basically spent my entire life surrounded by it. but if a person likes white, gray, or beige good for them. it's their house. i just hope they're using those colors because they actually like them and not to "preserve the value".

also painted brick always looks bad. i've never seen it look good. brick was not meant to be painted so it either looks like a toddler did it or it ends up looking plastic.

This is from the fashion files of the 80's... I had this exact shirt and a Black Tuxedo from designer Fabrice Simon... The shirt is still  in a garment bag in the back of my closet... (pretty dated and no place to wear it)... but boy oh boy when I wore these I felt like a million dollars. (Tuxedo sadly lost with missing luggage that was never recovered)

I had something very similar... it went from Honolulu to London, and on to St. Thomas USVI and finally died about 15 years ago in NYC.
