That is really beautiful. I've always had a thing for colorful sweaters, well, and ties. Remember Cignal.? I had the loudest sweater they ever made...I think. I also had a Ralph Lauren cardigan. One of the real think ones that looked like an Indian blanket. I loved that thing. I called it my Starsky sweater. I literally wore that one out. I kept stitching it back together before finally losing it in a move somewhere along the way. My Cignal sweater was stolen out of a locker at a gym. 😒

It really took me a while to embrace wearing colors... but once I started there was no stopping me. I had a Ralph Lauren jean jacket that had an Indian blanket lining that was reversible... it was one of my favorite things lost in Hurricane Hugo. I'm sorry about your Cignal sweater.

I had to come into the 21st century kicking and screaming... I only got rid of our landline last year because the only people who ever called were trying to sell something or were scams... everyone else calls the cell or texts (the texting thing took me a while to embrace too)... we still have the phone because it's wired to the outside intercom.

I used to buy Fritos just to get these erasers to put on top of my pencils (I think they came in about six different colors) They discontinued the "Frito Bandito" ad campaign when it was deemed insulting and racist. (There was even a song that ran on the television ads that for some reason or another I still remember the words.

Banks used to give these out when you opened a new account. I got one from Barnett Bank in Florida after opening an account with money from my first job ever. I laid sod in the broiling Florida heat and humidity for minimum wage. I think it was 1.70 or something like that.

I used to love watching this show... an interesting side note... Arnold Margolin and Charles Fox wrote the theme song... this was around the time I was getting started with singing and voice over work and I auditioned... I did not get it (I could write a book about the things I auditioned for and did not get) the song was sung by the Cowsills in 1969... my day eventually  came; I got to sing a lot of snappy tunes and jingles in this era... Another fun fact... The Cowsills were the inspiration for The Partridge Family!

Geez Louise this show and Martin and Rowan's laugh-in were the deal. I loved Jo Anne Worley.

And these corny things. We saw these at the Town and Country Drive-in too. It was the place for this kind of stuff. All midnight movies ya know. Just imagine being in a station wagon with a bunch of horny straight guys. It was too much.

OK really test your memory. Each one of these shows was really great. The one thing they had in common was hot guys.

Geez Louise there was James Franciscus from Longstreet....James Stacy from Lancer...Robert Wagner from It takes a Thief...Tony Franciosa from The Name of the Game. Then there was Dennis Cole from Bracken's World.  Heavy sigh!

Yea Me too. There was a guy, Mike Hightower, in my neighborhood that could have been his younger brother. I was thunderstruck by both of them.

Well it looks like Elvis (not a big actual Elvis  fan but I do a great impression... "Thank you... thank you very much") has permanently left the building (the creator of this discussion) I tried to keep it going during his initial absence... so I'll pop my head in here and there when I find something or remember something interesting. Would love to hear more peoples memories and thoughts here...

I was working on a collage of family photos. I have tons of the actual photos and a lot I've scanned. I don't know who will actually care. Gen-zers are the most self involved group of humans I've seen in my lifetime. I doubt any of them will care at all about their heritage. I wax melancholy.

Anyway I was looing at these and remembered just things.

Remember these:

My dad never wore "designer" cologne. I don't think they even made it back then. Honestly, I can't think of when they did start making men's designer fragrances. He died in 1975 so I'm sure he missed the boat. Anyway he wore Skin Bracer and Aqua Velva all the time. Then there was the hair care stuff. I loved the way Wildroot smelled. My dad was very proper about how he looked all the time. He was obsessed with cleanliness. I'm sure he didn't know what to do with me. I always came in caked with mud. I guess I was 10 when he let me wear some. He wouldn't put in it on my face because of the alcohol burn. He'd put some on the back of my neck if there were a special occasion, o and for church. I loved my dad. He is truly missed.

Perhaps surprisingly, all of these products are still available.  Aqua Velva and Mennen Skin Bracer bottles still even closely resemble the ones shown above.  The packaging of the others has changed beyond recognition.  Aqua Velva also now has a few variants, like a musk scent.

Canoe and Brut were on the market by the mid-1960s.  British Sterling was either available by then or came along soon after that.  Whether you consider these to be designer fragrances or just high-end, mass-market brands, they were too expensive for my budget at the time.  The price of the designer fragrances that came along later are absurd, IMO.

I still use Aqua Velva today

So do I, except when I go out with friends...which hasn't happened much since Covid started.  Then I usually wear one of the more expensive aftershaves.  Fortunately, these products don't lose their fragrance over time, as far as I can tell.

Speaking of Brylcreem and nostalgia, remember the TV series "77 Sunset Strip" (1958-1964)?  Brylcreem was one of the main sponsors, and the character "Kookie" (Edd Byrnes) helped promote the product.  I had a slight crush on him back then, although now I can't imagine why.  He was soon replaced by Richard Chamberlain ("Dr. Kildare"), who I still lust after.

Well I can't wear any type of scent because I either break out or sneeze my head off. I've even gotten to the point I have to use fragrance free everything. Kinda boring. Allergies are weird. I developed an allergy to strawberries and tree nuts just last year. I've never had any sort of reaction to either of those things my whole life. It sucks getting old.

A common type of lube back in the day:

OK, the first image is a bit off the beaten path for this topic, but it's definitely nostalgic for some of us.  After you've finished ogling porn star Lane Fuller, notice the container at the bottom of the picture.  Although the product name has been masked, it's almost certainly Crisco shortening.  Back before the era of large pharmacy chains, most of us were unlikely to find any lubricant on the shelves of the neighborhood corner pharmacy that resembled the modern lube products that are now widely available.  Maybe the pharmacist had something behind the counter, where the "rubbers" were also kept back then, but that meant you had to ask for it.  Depending on your age, the pharmacist might not even let you buy it, and the embarrassment factor was potentially very high in any case.  What if one of your parents' friends overheard your request and told them about it, or the pharmacist mentioned it to one of them the next time they came into the shop?  😳  (We weren't all as bold and fearless in our teen years as @Kawika might have been! 😉)

But Crisco was readily available on the shelves of every grocery store, and you could buy it without raising an eyebrow, regardless of your age.  (Possibly even quite the opposite: "What a nice young man, running an errand for his mother!" 😂)  The stuff could get pretty messy, but it got the job done.

Legends tell of a time before I was born when jars of Crisco could be found in every leather club and sex dungeon in the country. The brilliance of Crisco is that most expensive fisting lubes on the market today all more or less copy the old-school original — a simple vegetable shortening sold for a few dollars at every grocery store. Some of these more expensive lubes add a nice anal relaxant or a nice scent, but if you’re looking to save money, use the original fisting lube.
