Nostalgic memories of the 50's

I was born in the late 60's so this is a bit before my time, but it was great to watch

You are correct they were filled with colored flavored sugar.  My favorite was orange.

The early 30's were the Golden Era for horror movie posters in terms of artistic creativity.

An ad that promoted Bela Lugosi, who turned down the role of the Monster.  As it was originally written, the  monster was basically a killing machine.  If you've ever seen Ed Wood, Martin Landau has a line alluding to this; the Monster " is all makeup and grunting."

How many of you knew that at the same time Universal was filming Dracula with Lugosi, they were filming a Spanish-language version at night, using the same sets, cameras etc.?

Lupita Tovar played the female lead.  Perhaps because the film was to be shown in nations that didn't have strict film-censorship codes like the US, she wore costumes that had a lower neckline.

Did anyone grow up in a cold snowy place? I came across this and had to do some research... apparently you put these on over your socks and then wore snow boots...

This was never a thing in Honolulu!

LOL, I should've clarified.

Gilbert played a dual role in one episode of the TV series Son of the Beach.  He was a rabbi who was transformed into a vampire.  Can't find any photos of Gilbert as the vampire, unfortunately.

Here's a brief review, with some video of Gilbert as the vampire

I believe this is the entire episode

The actor who played Dracula in the Spanish version wasn't as subtle as Lugosi, so most reviews over the past 90 years are in agreement - Carlos' performance doesn't compare to Bela's.

Enterthe_Drac_Laz2.jpg

Lots of eye-popping and face mugging like in the early silent comedies.  When Carlos sees Renfield's crucifix he stares at it and makes a sour face, as if he drank some really strong lemonade.  Lugosi quickly turned away and shielded his entire head with his cape, something you'd expect a vampire to do when they see an image of the Son of God.

Screen-Shot-2021-02-16-at-1.32.03-AM-750x562.jpg#carlos villarías from Going Rampant

I'm not suggesting he should've imitated Lugosi, but this is NOT the kind of facial expression I'd expect from a vampire who's survived centuries...
