Remake (cover w sample/sampling)

Wikipedia,

"Everything" is a song by American singer Mary J. Blige. It was written and produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis for Blige's third album, Share My World (1997). The song contains samples from "You Are Everything" (1971) by American soul group The Stylistics and "The Payback" (1973) by American singer James Brown, also incorporating elements from "Sukiyaki" (1961) by Japanese singer Kyu Sakamoto. Due to the inclusion of the samples, Brown, Hachidai Nakamura, Rokusuke Ei, Linda Creed, Thom Bell, John Starks, and Fred Wesley are also credited as songwriters.

Remake (covers)

"Fever" is a song written by Eddie Cooley and Otis Blackwell, who used the pseudonym "John Davenport". It was originally recorded by American R&B singer Little Willie John for his debut album, Fever (1956), and released as a single in April of the same year 1956. The song topped the Billboard R&B Best Sellers in the US and peaked at number 24 on the Billboard pop chart.[1] It was received positively by music critics and included on several lists of the best songs during the time it was released.

re-recording; while artists re-recording their old material gained significant public attention in recent years due to taylor swift it has been done for decades for various reasons. artists will re-record to gain control of a master recording (like swift), to celebrate a milestone (such as an anniversary), or to simply update a song with new vocals or arrangement.

ayumi hamasaki re-recorded a small selection of her early songs in commemoration of her 10th anniversary. this recording of who was included on a complete, the compilation also released in commemoration of her 10th anniversary.

cyndi lauper re-recorded several of her songs for her the body acoustic album, giving the songs new "acoustic" based arrangements.

jojo re-recorded her first two albums due to label issues which prevented the albums from being on streaming services at the time.

cher re-recorded her classic hit bang bang (my baby shot me down) for her 1987 self-titled album. now simply titled bang bang the song was re-worked to fit cher's rock/arena-rock style at the time.

Remake, (covers) remade

The entire Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 1967 album by The Beatles was covered by various artists, including the Bee Gees, and remade into a movie of the same name for the soundtrack in 1978 starring Peter Frampton, the Bee Gees, and many others...

Wikipedia

"Strange Fruit" is a song written and composed by Abel Meeropol (under his pseudonym Lewis Allan) and recorded by Billie Holiday in 1939. The lyrics were drawn from a poem by Meeropol published in 1937. The song protests the lynching of Black Americans with lyrics that compare the victims to the fruit of trees. Such lynchings had reached a peak in the Southern United States at the turn of the 20th century and the great majority of victims were black.[2] The song has been called "a declaration" and "the beginning of the civil rights movement".[3]

Meeropol set his lyrics to music with his wife and the singer Laura Duncan and performed it as a protest song in New York City venues in the late 1930s, including Madison Square Garden. Holiday's version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1978.[4] It was also included in the "Songs of the Century" list of the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.[5] In 2002, "Strange Fruit" was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress[6] as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant".

remake; in 2001, japanese singer hitomi shimatani released a cover of janet jackson's doesn't really matter under the title papillon. the two songs only share their instrumental and melody as the lyrics were completely re-written, not just translated. jackson initially blocked the release officially because she did not like the new lyrics. after a month of negotiations jackson allowed the release going to to say she appreciated seeing a new aspect of doesn't really matter "arranged in an asian style".

Although the next two songs are about revolution, they are anti-revolution songs.

Rebellion

Punk rock representated the disenfranchisement and rebellion in society, often visualized by sneering/snarling, leather, ripped clothing, statement haircuts, and through metalwork.

London's punk rock scene in the 1970s was much more focused (politically) than the varied and often quite colorful New York Rock Scene. Nonetheless, some thought the band Blondie, which emerged from the latter, abandoned their roots (some pun intended) to evolve commercially (successfully) into the glitz of the disco and pop culture of more mainstream music of the 1970s/1980s.

rejected; songs that were recorded during album sessions but ultimately rejected and not included on the final product. sometimes these songs will get released as b-sides, bonus tracks, or on special/deluxe editions of the album. other times they remain officially unreleased or will go on to be recorded by another artist entirely.

brooklyn nights was intended for artpop, lady gaga's third album. it did not make the album, being released through artpop's companion app instead. brooklyn nights is among some 90 songs gaga recorded during the artpop sessions, the majority of which remain unreleased legally or illegally.

alone again was written by madonna and rick nowels during the sessions for her music album, and madonna also presumably recorded a demo at that time. madonna did not release the song (and no version sung by madonna has ever been released or been leaked) with it instead going to kylie minogue. minogue's recording was reportedly meant to be a b-side for come into my world but this did not happen. minogue's recording ultimately appeared in her white diamond documentary film after which it leaked online.

graffiti my soul is a fan favorite album cut from girls aloud's second album, what will the neighbours say?. however, the song was originally intended for britney spears' fourth album in the zone. spears' team felt the song "needed moreof a chorus" with writer and producer brian higgins saying they was "essentialy sound of the ungerground 2", referncing girls aloud's debut, breakthrough hit.

Revisionism

Many have written in great depth and detail about about music artists engaging in the practice of pandering to what is current, both politically and musically. What seemed like a good idea (subject matter)at the time may not be acceptable or popular now. What a song didn't contain, can be infused with new life by adding added meaning by a songwriter.

Both these songs are muddled by facts and fiction.

We may never know their true meaning and what they are about.

I loved these songs long before the internet/social media, and I'll enjoy them long after the internet/social media is dead and gone (wishful thinking much?).

So let's all just enjoy these to bangers!

rejected; janet jackson recorded a demo of i'm a slave 4 u during the sessions for all for you. jackson decided to pass on the song later, however, due to the optics of her being a black woman singing the words "i'm a slave for you". the song was then given to britney spears who recorded and released i'm a slave 4 u as the first single from her thrid studio album britney

Rejected

Former child/teen star Paul Petersen (The Donna Reed Show) was trying to establish himself as an adult actor in the late 1960s. One of the ways studios helped burgeoning stars achieve success was to have them record songs/albums.

Petersen was asked to record a song written by composer Jimmy Webb. Petersen said he was not interested.

In 1968 Glenn Campbell and The Wrecking Crew recorded the song, Wichita Lineman

Redundancy/Repetition in chord changes/riffs lyrics, sampling, etc

Example: When Jack Harlow ends a sentence with "baby" throughout the song

"But I ain't no killer, baby"

I don't like no whips and chains, and you can't tie me down
But you can whip your lovin' on me, baby
Whip your lovin' on me, baby

I'm vanilla, baby, I'll choke you (I don't like no whips and chains)
But I ain't no killer, baby (and you can't tie me down)
She twenty-eight, tellin' me I'm still a baby (but you can whip your lovin' on me, baby)
I get love from Detroit like Skilla Baby (whip your lovin' on me, baby)
And the thing about your boy is
I don't like no whips and chains, and you can't tie me down
But you can whip your lovin' on me, baby (that's right, that's right)
Whip your lovin' on me, baby

Young J-A-C-K, AKA Rico, like Suave, Young Enrique
Speakin' of AKA, she's a alpha
But not around your boy, she get quiet 'round your boy, hold on (shh)
Don't know what you heard or what you thought about your boy
But they lied about your boy, goin' dumb and it's some' idiotic 'bout your boy
She wearin' cheetah print, that's how bad she wanna be spotted 'round your boy

I don't like no whips and chains, and you can't tie me down
But you can whip your lovin' on me, baby
Whip your lovin' on me

I'm vanilla, baby, I'll choke you (I don't like no whips and chains)
But I ain't no killer, baby (and you can't tie me down)
She twenty-eight, tellin' me I'm still a baby (but you can whip your lovin' on me, baby)
I get love from Detroit like Skilla Baby (whip your lovin' on me, baby)
And the thing about your boy is
I don't like no whips and chains, and you can't tie me down
But you can whip your lovin' on me, baby
Whip your lovin' on me, baby

Young M-I-S-S-I-O-N-A-R-Y
You sharp like barbed wire
She stole my heart, then she got archived
I keep it short with a bitch, Lord Farquaad
All the girls in the front row, ayy
All the girls in the barricade, ayy
All the girls that been waitin' all day, let your tongue hang out
F*ck everything, ayy
If you came with a man (yeah, yeah)
Let go of his hand (let go of this shit)
Everybody in the suite, kickin' up they feet
Stand up, bitch, dance

I don't like no whips and chains (I see you)
And you can't tie me down (and all the guys in the back waitin' for the next track)
But you can whip your lovin' on me, baby (cut your boy a slack)
Whip your lovin' on me (it's young Jack)

I'm vanilla, baby, I'll choke you (I don't like no whips and chains)
But I ain't no killer, baby (and you can't tie me down)
She twenty-eight, tellin' me I'm still a baby (but you can whip your lovin' on me, baby)
I get love from Detroit like Skilla Baby (whip your lovin' on me, baby)
And the thing about your boy is
I don't like no whips and chains, and you can't tie me down
But you can whip your lovin' on me, baby (that's right, that's right)
Whip your lovin' on me, baby
I don't like no whips and chains, and you can't tie me down
But you can whip your lovin' on me, baby
Whip your lovin' on me, baby
