Seeing the last staging of HMS Pinafore by the original D'Oyly Carte Opera Company:

Original scenery? Have you seen Topsy-Turvey? The Mike Leigh film about the DC company staging The Mikado? It's beguiling and lovely, with beautiful performances, and even though it's a period piece it's the best and most accurate backstage story I know.

I didn't have this but it seems like I knew a lot of people in college who did...

My husband has a set of similar dishes from his grandmother. Made by Royal, in the U.S.A. - though pieces aren't always marked, even within the same set. Apparently they were also sold through other outlets, like Sears.

Certainly rather tired looking scenery and costumes but by then the company was on the rocks despite Bridget D'Oyly Carte's best efforts to keep things going. The cast and music however transcended these imperfections. Yes, Topsy-Turvey is one of my all-time favourite films and I have it recorded.

Have you seen the 1939 film, shot at Pinewood(? Shepperton?) in beautiful 3-color Technicolor, that features quite of few of the principal actors from the D'Oyley Carte company using much of the original staging and business? The designs are ravishing, the costumes in particular, though I can't the remember name of the great (French) designer and since the enshitification of IMDB that info is no longer available without a paid sub. Anyway, it's now showing, gloriously restored, on Criterion here in the States along with Topsy-Turvy!!! Which has been unavailable for several years. I think the Blu Ray is available on amazon.

I made my lifetime stage debut as one of the girls' chorus in Mikado at my London school. More recently I played Sir Joseph in a charming and beautifully sung revival of Pinafore. Not s specialist but I've come to enjoy their work a good deal.

I will have a look at it. I'm thinking of going to the G&S festival in Buxton this year (27 July – 10 August 2024 ) but will need to review finances before booking as the car needs replacing:sad:.

Thank you so much for the link. What treat to have some of the best twentieth century D'Oyly Carte principals at the height of their powers, supported by the LSO rather than the usual small pit orchestra.

Maybe it's just me... but Broadway does not captivate me as much as it used to... the only thing I've seen so far this year is "Merrily We Roll Along" (one of my favorites... I just loved it... if you want to see it... hurry it closes in July)) and I have tickets for "The Roommate" with Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone in September... I saw Miss Farrow in "Romantic Comedy" in 1979 and "Love Letters" in 2014... I think I've seen everything Miss LuPone has done except the last installment of "Company"

I love going... but oh la la it's become expensive... I should have never taken for granted all the passes I got and freebies from Actors Equity.

Much of this was actually filmed in 1975 for a bicentennial release... this commercial and at the same time I had a  small recurring role on a daytime drama (where I was brutally killed at the end of July) were the two main factors in my dry cleaner asking for my head shot for his wall of fame.

As a small boy I was fascinated by the display of motion lamps in the window of the local electrical and lighting shop.

I won't bore you with more YouTube clips... (there are dozens) I just got off the telephone with a friend... we used to both  be on the Outrigger Canoe Club Men's Volleyball Team in the 70's... I was an alternate... Pan Am and my side gigs with Coca-Cola and what not kept me pretty busy.

My grandmother had one (not as nice as these), that showed a scene of a forest fire. Similar to one shown in this video, but I think a different company, with a plastic base and top.

I think some of the best ones were scenes based on Currier and Ives prints. My favourites were the John Bull locomotive and the Mississippi steam boat - I was a steam nerd from an early age!
