Gladiators were the source of "muscle porn" in the 1960s era. Other than the blockbuster movies of that time, after the live wrestling programs after the 10:00o'clock news went off, there were usually some gladiator movies on after that. Mostly B-grade movies made in Europe, many in English, but some dubbed-in. They all had good tans and lots of muscle.

Obviously they all led very focused lives in poor conditions, they did look good, generally. Then came "Spartacus" the series and its full nudity, which was probably more accurate.
