Harry Bush Drawings 1960's-70's

I did not realize when I started this thread that most of my Harry Bush collection still needed to be scanned and put on a disc... here are some of the things I already have (Before I started collecting his work I did not realize he actually used models in many instances)... as shown...

Came across this and thought you might be interested. You may already know it; some was news to me. Got it from Tumblr. And plus the picture! And bruh, the links here are dead. I say that with somewhat inappropriate love and am not complaining, you understand. Bush must surely have been a professional illustrator, no? His line and technique have the assurance of someone like Leyendecker. The Tumblr piece doesn't mention it but was he protecting his professional reputation and livelihood? There have been a couple of other widely published gar artists who also doubled as commercial illustrators; Richard White, eg? The brief bio is as sad as it is enraging for all that was lost, for all the needless suffering endured by so many generations of men and women.

Harry Bush (1920-1994) was an American illustrator, known for his homoerotic “California Boy” style. Bush’s meticulously detailed “boy next door” depictions of men made him one of the most recognizable artists of the “Beefcake” magazine era. Bush began his career as a military man, first in the Navy, then in the Air Force and finally behind a desk at the Pentagon. His first gay encounter occurred while stationed in Europe. Retiring from the military at age 40, Bush was discovered by Bob Mizer, the founder of The Athletic Model Guild. In 1966, Bush work was published for the first time in Physique Pictorial. He was notoriously reclusive and critical of what he perceived as the superficiality of the gay community. The isolation, fears of copyright infringement and of being outed to his family led him to destroy much of his work. Bush remained closeted for the majority of his life in constant concern of losing his veteran’s pension. Despite this, he never worked under a pseudonym and signed all of his work with his real name. In the 1970’s-80’s he was continually approached b gay gay adult film stars to draw them, always declining, despite the rewards offered. Bush died in 1994 due to complications of emphysema. An anthology for surviving works was published posthumously in 2007.
