   My intention isn’t to capture an ideal or present the pinnacle of beauty. I distort and exaggerate certain physical features to capture, amplify and accentuate the essence of my subjects.
   I look for interesting faces, for details that I can interpret, for ways to heighten what I see.
   I’m drawn to a bold, resilient beauty that’s imperfect and asymmetrical... the rare magnetism of men and women who are truly comfortable in their skin.

2. Etienne

   Artwork of the late artist Dom Orejudos, also known by his pen name, ‘Etienne’. Born in Chicago in 1933, he and his long-term lover-slash-business partner Chuck Renslow became queer pioneers by drawing and lensing gay erotica which sexualised muscular, sharp-jawed, hyper-masculine subjects. At the time, Orejudos’ sexy illustrations were subversive; they challenged the pervasive link between heterosexuality and masculinity, flipping stereotypes of what ‘gay’ should look like.
   He may have eventually become best-known for his filthy, brilliant works of gay erotica, but Orejudos initially began his career as a ballet dancer. After studying at ballet school he received a slew of scholarships, and later went on to become resident choreographer at the Illinois Ballet Company, whilst simultaneously working for dozens of other clients.
   Orejudos even staged his own ballet for a Chicago radio station, landing three Emmy Awards in the process; in the context of the notoriously conservative ballet industry, this achievement was no small feat. This glittering career is also reportedly the reason for his pen names ‘Stephen’, his middle name, and ‘Étienne’, its French equivalent – coined to shield him from controversy.

6. Michael Breyette

   Originally from remote upstate New York near the Canadian border, Michael can’t remember a time when he didn’t draw or paint.  When he was a teenager he satisfied his fascination with the male physique by painting muscular heroes in fantasy or sci-fi settings.  However he attempted to avoid too many questions about his sexuality by often including a buxom female character as well. Michael never expected his pastime of drawing and painting would become a career.  Born and bred in a conservative and rural area, being openly gay didn't even seem a possibility, let alone having an artistic career that indulged in homoerotica.  It wasn't until moving away many years later that Michael was able to open up and be the man and the artist that he is today.   
   Upon moving to a more progressive region of the USA, his artwork, which had been selftaught and a lifelong hobby, blossomed and evolved as he began expressing his true self on his drawing board as well as in his life.  His infatuation for the male form took his art in a more self-expressive direction. During this same period he transitioned from oils to soft pastels.  Thus began his journey of creating beautiful masculine paintings primarily with fingers, and as he refers to pastels, “colorful dust.” 
   While attractive athletic male physiques are a cornerstone of his work he thinks of the figures he creates not as the focus but as messengers of moments, ideas, and emotions he’s wishing to express.

13. Chris Lopez

    Fascinated for years of classical art and illustration studies I play easily and comfortably with the male form in a variety of techniques: acrylic, watercolor, charcoal and digital. I “speak” every technique like a different language the laws of light and shadow with a contemporary reminiscence of the old masters.
    My artwork is not sexual, rather intimate and comforting. It conveys the pleasure of being alone naked by ourselves. Nudity for me is that intimate moment where there is nothing to hide when we are alone with our own vulnerability.
