Colombia legalises same-sex adoption

Colombia’s constitutional court has legalised adoption by gay couples this week.

A previous ruling in the country banned same-sex partners from adopting, unless one of them was a biological parent.

The court, which reached its decision in a 6-2 vote, said that not allowing gay couples to adopt “limits children’s rights to a family”.

Chief justice of the Constitutional Court, Maria Victoria Calle Correa, said: “A person’s sexual orientation or gender are not in and of themselves indicative of a lack of moral, physical or mental suitability to adopt.”

Same-sex couples are allowed to enter into legal unions in the South American country, but calls for gay marriage were rejected by Congress in 2013.

It's interesting that, on one hand, they think that a gay couple can sustain the right 'moral, physical, and mental suitability' for a loving household for a  third party (the adopted child), yet those two people can't offer the same suitability to each other?  You would think the country would allow gay marriage first on those grounds, and then later introduce adoption.  But when has gay marriage ever been about logic?
