Indeed.  Or take Metro, DC's subway system.  Near the left edge of the first image above, about halfway down is a black pillar with a large M at its top.  That marks an entrance to a Metro station, which is beyond the arched passageways on the right.  Alas, the escalators down to the Metro stations often don't work because of maintenance budget limitations, so they're effectively just stairways.  And non-rush-hour service is so infrequent (every 20-30 minutes, at best) that if you're not going very far, yeah, as you say, just walk.🙄
