Give them a job to count back change without a cash register device that tells them how much change to give back!!!  Watch them figure that one out!  Not that they can't, just that it's a new experience for them to "figure it out" successfully.

So true.  And once they've failed that, give them a math question (even simple addition and subtraction) and tell them to do it in their head, not use their phone and see what they can come up with!

I still remember... I have an envelope full of bills and coins ... it might be a in another thread... but I always keep a 5 pence coin my father gave me in my right shoe for luck... I think about him and the day he gave it to me every day.

That's how the original Hewlett-Packard hand calculators were configured.  Which is why you only saw engineering students and engineers using the in their first years of production.  Why I bought a Texas Instruments calculator that worked "normally".

HP calculators are still configured in reverse polish format   My HP-11C still works like a charm
