Clarification: Pres. Trump appointed Ambassador Grenell only as Acting Director of National Intelligence. The President did not nominate him to the Senate for confirmation to the Cabinet post. (In press interviews on camera and for the record, Pres. Trump explicitly expressed his preference for "acting" appointees to Cabinet and sub-Cabinet positions because he believed the political costs of firing/replacing them were lower than dismissing someone from a Senate-confirmed position.) So as a matter of record and of fact, Mr. Buttigieg would be the first openly gay person to be formally nominated to the Senate for confirmation to the Cabinet.
