  The “Playgirl” article in Wikipedia also credits his photo as the first.  Neither of those two sources is necessarily authoritative, though.  For some unknown reason, there’s a widespread belief that Brian Buzzini's erection photos in the June 1985 issue were the first, but Minger’s photo clearly rebuts that, as does Rally’s photo above from January 1985.

The consensus seems to be that this photo of Lupus showed at most a partial erection, not a full hard-on.  He was extremely well-hung, so even a partial erection might easily have been mistaken for a full one.  (And I drooled a lot over that photo spread!)  Between 1974 and 1980, there were also numerous other photos that many “Playgirl” fans consider to show erections, while many other fans believe the photos show only partial ones.  The models themselves may be the only ones who know for sure whether they had a genuine boner in those photos or just a partial chubbie.  But everyone should be able to agree that Minger’s cock is standing at full staff in the January 1980 issue.
