John was actually the first Playgirl erection. The shower scene shows less than a raging hardon but still a hard on

Constant chatter and even debate over who had the first Playgirl hardon. The consensus is usually around Geoff Minger’s 1980 spread. Admittedly, Mr. Minger’s is the first “ prominent” erection. While not as erect, the honor, nonetheless, has to go to John for his 1976 shower scene. Anybody gonna argue?

Actually, I think Playgirl's first erection was in the "Listening to the Sun Rise" couple pictorial in the April 1974 issue, though the editors chose to publish a view in which the male model's penis looked like it could be "floating" on the water (yeah, sure), up against his female companion's leg.  Daringly, the magazine even reproduced that image in the table of contents for the issue.  A more subtle (and completely underwater) erection belonged to September 1974 Discovery, surfer Mike Purpus, however it wasn't seen in that issue but rather in "Playgirl's Men" Vol.2 (a/k/a "The Best"), published in 1975.  And speaking of daring . . . In the May 1977 issue, the editors published a letter purporting to be from a woman in NYC who wrote that she was a NYC high school biology teacher who had confiscated the November issue from two female students, one of whom had attached a note to the cover reading "Page 52 and 69 -- big ones."  (Those were the pages containing the photo of John Joseph Mills erect in the shower with his girlfriend and a photo of man-of-the-month Beau Lawrence in a very advanced state of arousal.)  The writer continued:  "When I looked at those pages I saw pictures of men with erect things!"  Gotta add that I've always been skeptical of this letter's bona fides, as what high school biology teacher would refer to penises as "things"?  Nonetheless, it was quite daring of the magazine to publish -- in the spring of 1975! -- a letter openly referring to its having published photos of men with erections the previous year.

Sorry, that should have read "in the spring of 1977."
