Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster wrote Me and Bobby McGee in 1968 and was recorded by Janis Joplin posthumously in 1971

“The first time I heard Janis Joplin’s version was right after she died. Paul Rothchild, her producer, asked me to stop by his office and listen to this thing she had cut. Afterwards, I walked all over L.A., just in tears. I couldn’t listen to the song without really breaking up. So when I came back to Nashville, I went into the Combine [Publishing] building late at night, and I played it over and over again, so I could get used to it without breaking up.”

Later that year it was recorded by Sammi Smith, subsequently by Gladys Knight & the Pips, Michael Bublé, Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Tina Turner, Loretta Lynn and many more.

Kristofferson said he was inspired by an interview Frank Sinatra gave to Esquire Magazine. Sinatra was asked what he believed in. Sinatra, "Booze, broads, or a bible...whatever helps me make it through the night."

Kristofferson was married to Rita Coolidge from 1973 to 1980
