Greatly admired by Thornton Wilder, student  of Mira Rostova (not a 'method' actor) he was an accomplished stage actor before, reluctantly, he began to make movies. Standout performances are A Place in the Sun, The Search, and - I think his best - Miss Lonelyhearts. He lived in New York as much as he could. There are many stories of his final years, none of them pleasant, least of all for him. If you haven't seen it, here's a link to the scene in which he and John Ireland 'compare guns'. And yes, they knew exactly what they were doing.
