Thanks for the memories…Vintage Updated
I have a special fondness for pre-1960’s men. Here are some of my favorites (predominantly pre-1960’s, but some ‘60s and 70’s mixed in)…
I am fascinated by the motives behind these men’s reasons for stripping down. Did they do it simply for the fast cash? Did they do it because they wanted to show off their beautiful bodies? Did they do it to defy authority? Whatever their logic, they had no way of knowing that their images would be viewed and appreciated 70-80 years later.
I love the style of the WWII men in (and out) of uniform. I love the rebel bad boys, the bikers, the cowboys, the boy next door types, and the muscle studs from the ‘40’s and ‘50’s. And, yes, the 1930’s produced a lot of of incredibly handsome young men.
Some of us have a misconception that our ancestors were asexual. Obviously, they were just as sex fueled as we are. And, they seemingly kept in better shape, and took pride in their appearance.
I have furiously been scanning the Internet to find more vintage nude men (It’s a hard job, but someone has to do it).
1930-1960 seems to be my favorite period. The WWII heroes really touch my heart. Remember, the young men who fought in that war were fresh off the farm or plucked from their small towns and expiated to a bloody battlefield overseas. Most of them hadn’t been but a few miles from home prior to their enlistment. Most hadn’t even been out of the county or state they were born in until their country called. They served their country then returned home, never thinking of themselves as heroes.
It is harder to find photos of the men who fought the Korean War. Those heroes fought what is often referred to as “the forgotten war”. They certainly are not forgotten today, in our hearts.
The young men who battled and suffered in the Vietnam War are today a dying breed. The survivors of that war at least now know we respect them immensely for their sacrifices. Their pictures are also hard to find. But, I’ve found a few.
I’ve added fresh pictures. Enjoy! I appreciate your feedback and messages and mail.
🇺🇸
I’ve updated the gallery. If I’ve repeated some of the pictures, please forgive me. I’ll go through and try to delete the duplicates.
I’m also interested in knowing which era or decade (of naked men) you prefer. Just message me and I’ll try my best to find more nude men of that time period.
On a side note, I’ve noticed the men from the late 1800s and early 1900s were very comfortable and very willing to pose nude (and even engage in man on man sex) in front of the camera.
The camera was new to them. It was a foreign object that miraculously produced their image. Why did they pose nude for this new contraption in the late 1800s and early 1900s? We’ll never know what motivated them to strip naked and expose their beauty or partake in sexual delights with their friends. They may have assumed that only a select few people would see those photographs. They obviously could never have imagined that those pictures would be seen throughout the world 100 years later. Their world back then was probably confined to a 20 mile radius of their home.
They struggled, they worked, they rested. And, obviously, they enjoyed their sexual freedom. It seems the late 1800s and early 1900s saw a rise in uninhibited individuals. The 1930s continued it. Then, something happened. The 1940s brought forth the postal regulations that told us that male nudity was “immortal and perverted”, so to speak. While many of our WWII servicemen stripped naked for the camera when they were on leave (or even on the battlefield), the sense at home was “sexual intercourse was strictly for procreation”. Heaven forbid you should even think about masturbating. And, oral sex would send you to hell in a heartbeat.
The war finally ended. The GIs returned home. Some of them had homosexual relationships while off fighting overseas. They never talked about that. After all, the 1940s were a time of serving your country, not your sexual urges. They married their girlfriends, settled down, bought a home, a car, and there was money to spare. Life was good.
They woke up one morning and it was 1950. While the all American families worked, prospered, supported their President, and attended church, an underground of activity was bubbling. It was beneath the surface. The all American families didn’t see it, so it didn’t exist. But it did, it did exist. Men were having sex with each other, men were posing naked for photographers, men were meeting in homosexual establishments. All the while, the all American families were watching their new black and white TVs and hoping for a telephone one day. What did they watch on those bulky, awkward TVs? Why, shows about all American families, of course.
Meanwhile, the photographers who were taking the pictures of the nude young men were being harassed by the postal service and the police and the government. The photographers were being arrested. After all, it was America 1950s style. Even the word sex was a four letter word. You shouldn’t say pregnant. No, no, no. According to the all American image, girls were programmed to one day marry a man who could support them. And, boys were programmed to be masculine and contribute to their country. No one said anytime about men posing naked for photographs or men engaging in homosexual activities. No, no, no. The authorities took care of that. The police worked to squash that. After all, that didn’t fit in to the all American image. This was the 1950s, you know. Life was perfect and pure and Americans were Godly and good. Sex was for procreation, remember. Ah, the 1950s. But, something was in the air. Something was on the horizon. Something was brewing where it once just bubbled. The surface was about to meet the underground.
January 2, 1960…Senator John F. Kennedy announced he was running for President of the United States. The Democrats fell in love. Current President Eisenhower’s Vice President Richard Nixon was to be the challenger. The Republicans fell in line.
A new decade was here. The stern, repressed, socially acceptable 1950s were surrendering to an unknown 1960s. Would America elect a fresh, youthful, visionary like Kennedy, or a man like their father or teach or preacher or car salesman in Nixon?
And, would America ever fully accept the nude male body on display? Would America ever allow magazines that featured pictures of penises and testicles in bookstores? Would the USPS continue to block such pictures? Would authorities continue to arrest and prosecute the men who marketed the pictures? After all, the 1950s were all about “the perfect American image”. No sex. Unless you were married, then it was for procreation, not enjoyment.
The housewives of the 1950s were prescribed “black beauties” by their doctors to give them energy. After all, the housewives were overworked. It was difficult keeping up with the house chores and the children and the husband. It was tiring. So, the little black pills helped. The housewives had that extra “pep”. The “black beauties” worked wonders for the housewives of the 1950s. Little did the children of the 1950s know their moms were on speed. Actually, the moms themselves didn’t know it was speed. They just thought it was “pep pills”. Ah, but as they headed into the 1960s, those all American moms would one day lead crusades against all drugs, including speed. Ironically, never realizing they were once speed freaks…
It was November 1960…It was a close race, but the handsome, wealthy, charismatic Senator from Massachusetts was elected President of the United States. The old school 1950s handed over the country to the unknown 1960s. Americans expected peace and prosperity. After all, World War II was behind them, and the conflict in Korea was forgotten. President-elect Kennedy would keep them out of future wars. They really didn’t even consider the thought of another war on the horizon. It was, after all, 1960. People were still in the 1950s mode. Sex was for procreation. Nudity was forbidden. Playboy magazine was scandalous. Male nudity was illegal. The drug culture was for underground freaks. Homosexuality was an illness. Masturbation was not discussed…Would any of that change in the new decade?

The Piers Updated
From NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project:
By the early 20th century, Greenwich Village's Hudson River waterfront and numerous piers with Beaux Arts style shipping terminals comprised the busiest section of New York's port for cargo and trans-Atlantic passengers, with merchant ships, steamships, barges, and commuter ferries.
Changes in the maritime industry and the growth of the airlines made the piers and the large shipping terminals obsolete, leading them to be abandoned by the mid-1960s. The dilapidated structures - including Pier 45 (known as the Christopher Street Pier) opposite West 10th Street, and piers 46, 48, and 51 - were reappropriated as a destination for gay men to sunbathe naked, cruise, and have public sex by the early 1970s.
