White House poised to create first monument to gay rights struggle

@Steve : Thanks for posting this.  I’ve always found it amusing that a group of drag queens played such a prominent role in starting the open resistance to the police raids of the Stonewall Inn.  You go, girl!

The article by Jonathan Capehart (who's gay) at the first link discusses this in some detail.  According to that story, a “drag king” (a woman dressed like a man) is generally credited with throwing the first punch at a policeman.  (Note that Capehart’s article is from 2 years ago, so this June 28 will mark the 47th anniversary of the beginning of the riots, not the 45th mentioned in the article.)

It may come as a surprise to some of our younger members that in those days, you could actually be arrested, or at least detained, just for being in a gay bar.  The police raided the Stonewall Inn very frequently in those days, sometimes several times each week.  We’ve sure come a long way since then, at least as long as you don’t get caught having sex in a bar’s restroom.  Unfortunately, as the recent anti-LGBT law in North Carolina and “religious freedom” laws in numerous other states illustrate all too clearly, we still have a long way to go in the struggle for truly equal rights.  But we can pause every June 28 to celebrate the progress that we’ve made so far.

Thanks @Steve for sharing this great story.  The monument will be a great testament to that location's birthplace and import to gay history in America, and hopefully a reminder of the struggles that people had to live through.

I'm also glad that Obama is, even if it's at the twilight of his eight year Presidency, start to take bolder steps in recognizing gay rights.  I think it's a pure political ploy to delay it for so long, when he symbolized such overwhelming hope and optimism for the country only to sidestep gay rights for so long.

@JoelR : The consensus in both the gay community and among the political cognoscenti in D.C. pretty much agrees with you.  Gay marriage was particularly considered to be too hot to handle during Pres. Obama’s first term because it was widely thought to be such a divisive issue that it would pose significant problems for his 2012 re-election campaign.  That race did turn out to be close enough that a big issue like gay marriage could have cost him the election. Also, it was a huge setback when the Republicans so decisively took back control of the House of Representatives in the 2010 midterm elections.

The adage about the similarity between making sausage and making laws (i.e., politics) is extremely accurate.  HRC and the other major GLBT lobbying groups understand that and shape their actions accordingly.

On a brighter note, though, if you had predicted when Pres. Obama was first elected in 2008 that, before the end of his presidency, we’d see both “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repealed and gay marriage legalized by the Supreme Court — especially considering the composition of the Court at the time — most people, including within the LGBT community, would’ve thought you were dreaming.  But the struggle lives on.

LOL.  Woops, that one slipped out!  I was trying to avoid using “commentariat,” which was clever the first few times it was used 10-15 years ago.  Now, it’s long since been plumb worn out.  On the old AM site, someone once made a similar observation about a word used in a post by A Member of That Site Whose Name Shall Not Be Mentioned.  In keeping with his usual arrogant manner, that member replied that he occasionally liked to prod other members to stretch their intellects, or some similar supercilious balderdash.  I try not to entertain any such pretentions about myself.  Stuffy and/or pedantic, yes, all too often.  Pretentious, O Dear God, I pray not. xD

I always considered you to be an intellectual foil for RobTheElder.  It made for excellent reading at night after work ... I'm actually rather sad that we don't have his usual rants (even if most of them were directed at yours truly, ha)

And now it’s official!  Today, Pres. Obama designated the Stonewall Inn, Christopher Park, and 7.7 acres of the surrounding area in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City as a U.S. national monument. Next Tuesday, June 28, is the 47th anniversary of the Stonewall riots against police raids of the gay bar. This 1969 riot and the nightly demonstrations that followed are considered one of the seminal events of the LGBT rights movement in the U.S.  (I’m not sure why the White House chose today for the announcement, instead of waiting a few more days until the actual anniversary date.  Also, it’s seldom mentioned that the Stonewall Inn, like many gay bars of its era, was Mafia-owned.)  A news article about the announcement is here:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2016/06/24/with-stonewall-obama-designates-first-national-momument-to-gay-rights-movement/?hpid=hp_regional-hp-cards_rhp-card-politics%3Ahomepage%2Fcard

The Stonewall Inn building itself had been designated a national historical landmark in 2000.  There are several Wikipedia articles about the Stonewall Inn, the Stonewall Riots, and related topics that provide additional historical detail.  Photo #1 is how the Stonewall Inn appeared in 1969, and #2-3 are how it appears today.  #1-2 are from Wikipedia and #3 from The Washington Post.

A link in @Steve’s original post above to a related Washington Post article by Jonathan Capehart (who is gay) seems to have disappeared.  The following op-ed by Capehart in today’s Post print edition is an updated version of the same article:

The long march from the Stonewall Inn

In addition, the following news article discusses other people and places that have played a significant role in the history of the struggle for LGBT rights:

A quiet campaign is placing gay people and their rights struggle in U.S. history
