Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a 1977 American science fiction film written and directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Richard Dreyfuss, Melinda Dillon, Teri Garr, Bob Balaban, Cary Guffey, and François Truffaut. It tells the story of Roy Neary, an everyday blue-collar worker in Indiana, whose life changes after an encounter with an unidentified flying object (UFO).

Close Encounters was a long-cherished project for Spielberg. In late 1973, he developed a deal with Columbia Pictures for a science-fiction film. Though Spielberg received sole credit for the script, he was assisted by Paul Schrader, John Hill, David Giler, Hal Barwood, Matthew Robbins, and Jerry Belson, all of whom contributed to the screenplay in varying degrees. The title is derived from Ufologist J. Allen Hynek's classification of close encounters with extraterrestrials, in which the third kind denotes human observations of extraterrestrials or "animate beings". Douglas Trumbull served as the visual effects supervisor, while Carlo Rambaldi designed the extraterrestrials.

One of my all time favorite movies! The acting is impeccable and the direction exemplary. The subtlety of Gloria Swanson in some scenes is breathtaking. The way she shifts from the intentional "overacting" to this understated natural rhythm is a wonder to behold. There just aren't actors like this any longer. As far as the awards go, Gloria Swanson was looked on as a traitor in such a damning film about how Hollywood actually operated. Allegedly, they wrote the Desmond role with Mary Pickford in mind and she was horrified at the prospect. The 1951 Oscars prove the politics of Hollywood. Bette Davis and Anne Baxter were both up for "All about Eve". They weren't going to give it to either because the talk was that the studio brass was angry about their both being in the same category. They weren't going to give it to Eleanor Parker for "Caged" because it was too socially controversial. The studios felt the nomination was enough.   That leaves Judy Holliday and Gloria Swanson. Judy Holliday won for "Born Yesterday". It was a fun comical farce. She was blond and pretty and very curvy. The movie isn't that great but it was the only thing left. They weren't going to reward Swanson for her "perceived" villainy.

I had no idea how uncompromising her performance is. And how carefully thought through. It's also brilliantly written but she pulls no punches in presenting herself as a monstrous predator, or letting herself be so physically grotesque. The 'overacting', as you say, is about the way the character presents herself in the manner of silent movies because it's how she's learned to get her way. The moment quite early on when she challenges Joe to go or stay and he submits to her, there isn't another way to read it, is superbly directed and acted. I was also knocked out by the scene between Joe and Max in which the man who discovered her, Max, tries to account for what she's become and in the process holds himself accountable for exploiting her youth and innocence. And how the final moments turn the story of corruption and exploitation onto the audience - you dear people out there in the dark - accusing the audience of creating the monster for our own diversion as she seems to escape the screen and comes right at you, claws at the ready. God, it's wonderful! Tarentino recreates a similar moment in Inglorious Basterds and so does Michael Haneke in Funny Games, the scariest movie I know. And that opening, with the shot of the gutter is as good as 'Rosebud!' or Touch of Evil.

The Graduate

A social force of cinema that influenced the generation gap, THE GRADUATE was a tour de force for newcomer Hoffman and made him an overnight sensation. Hoffman plays Ben Braddock, a pensive and somewhat shy youth of wealthy Southern California suburbia. Upon completion of his college studies, he's pressured by family and friends to "get going" with his life, encouraged at every turn to find a job, marry, and become a clone of his parents. Bancroft seduces Hoffman who cannot believe the older, married woman--she and her husband Hamilton are his parents' best friends--is pursuing him. Hoffman falls in love with her daughter Ross, and is put in the exhausting position of maintaining relationships with mother and daughter. He finally decides that Ross will be his wife, although Bancroft is wholly opposed to the union.

This comedy is wonderfully crafted by director Nichols who presents a half-dozen hilarious scenes, including Hoffman escaping badgering advice by submerging himself in the family pool in scuba gear and Bancroft's sudden shift from respectable matron to predatory tease, hiking her skirts lasciviously and purring promises of smoldering sex which almost put Hoffman into a comatose state. Nichols was to declare: "I think Benjamin and Elaine will end up exactly like their parents; that's what I was trying to say in the last scene." Yet the well-to-do younger audiences of the day interpreted this sequence of blatant heroics as a wonderful act of defiance by two young people whose destinies were being manipulated by their parents.

An Homage to "The Disney Renaissance"

screen-shot-2016-11-22-at-9-47-45-am.thumb.webp.e30b564b94a8b0c5099c0ad944ec57e4.webp

The Disney Renaissance was the period from 1989 to 1999 during which Walt Disney Feature Animation returned to producing critically and commercially successful animated films that were mostly musical adaptations of well-known stories, much as the studio did during the era of Walt Disney during the 1930s to 1960s. The resurgence allowed Disney's animated films to become powerhouse successes at the domestic and foreign box office, earning much greater profit than most of the Disney films of previous eras.

The animated films released by Disney during this period are: The Little Mermaid (1989), The Rescuers Down Under (1990), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Hercules (1997), Mulan (1998), and Tarzan (1999).

Although I spent a good part of my adult life in a Pan Am cabin (the L-1011 were the easiest to work as a crew member... the 747's were a non-stop dog and pony show especially in First) I miss all the old airlines... I flew on all these as a passenger more than a few times... now long gone

After the 747 the lower galley took some getting used to... but you could use it  as a refuge on long flights and not have to deal with passengers... L-1011 Galley Tour...but the cabin was a dream to work compared to other aircraft.

And after deregulation, there were many more, most or all of which either failed or were bought out by the few surviving major airlines.  Flew Northwest Orient (not a product of deregulation; later renamed Northwest), People Express, Air Florida, and New York Air.  Probably more, but the old brain has some memory holes in it.

TWA and US Air and PSA merged with American Airlines, and Western and Northwest merged with Delta... and Continental  merged with United... doing so expanded the route structure of the dominant airline... sadly Pan Am, Eastern and Braniff just disappeared because they were carrying so much debt (the sale of the Pan Am building in NYC is the only thing that saved the retirement packages for the employees)... the smaller airlines  unfortunately could not compete in the market.

I remember when Mc Donald's looked like this and the French Fries were made fresh at each restaurant... the menu was really  basic in the beginning and when they came out with the Fillet-O-Fish sandwich in the mid sixties it was the first addition to the menu.

McDonald's was my sister's first job in high school. I think minimum wage at that time was like a buck 50. The regular hamburger was 39 cents then. Fries I think were 25 cents.

Pat Sajak had a late night talk show that started airing in 1989... I liked it but I'm guessing a lot of people didn't because it only lasted a little over a year

There used to be a restaurant in Beverly Hills at 9040 Sunset Blvd just west of Doheny... Scandia... fabulous Scandinavian food.... Brunch on Sunday was my favorite time to go... you never knew who you would see there... I used to see Natalie Wood and Roddy Mc Dowall all the time (they probably thought I was stalking them... I thought they were stalking me for a while because I would see them together other places too) Sadly Scandia was demolished in 2015.

I flew all of them except Pan Am and Swiss Air - so sad to think they are only memories. FWIW, I went overseas (to London) on Braniff on a very special fare. my first passport, enjoyed every moment 😍

in my poor little town, we never had Mc Donalds - got Carroll's Drive-Ins around 1959 when I was starting junior high. unfortunately, there was no way to access Carrolls, as the school bus flew right by, and my parents didn't comprehend the concept of fast food - wow!

I worked at one in high school, and remember being one of the first males to work the counter at that time.  I remember that a burger, fries and drink was 99 cents!  It was actually a great place to work.
