Coca-Cola Angers Hungarian Conservatives Over Gay Kissing Ads

Coca-Cola has angered conservative Hungarian politicians and activists after it threw its support behind the LGBTIQ community with a new ad campaign featuring gays kissing and enjoying an icy cold coke.

The ads have been splashed on billboards as well as the company’s Hungarian Facebook page. They show couples sharing a cold drink for the “Love is Love” campaign accompanied with slogans such as “Zero Sugar, Zero Prejudice”.

A politician from the ruling Fidesz party as well as conservative media outlets have called for the drink maker to be boycotted.

Coca-Cola has released a statement saying, “The Coca-Cola Company strives for diversity, inclusion and equality in our business, and we support these rights in society as well.”

“As a longstanding supporter of the LGBTQI community, we believe everyone has the right to love the person they choose. The campaign currently running in Hungary reflects these values.”

The campaign coincides with the Budapest-based progressive Sziget music festival.

Despite the outcry among the conservatives a growing number of Hungarians support gay rights, with 60 per cent of the country believing the community should have equal rights according to a 2017 survey by the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association.

But an MP from the ruling party Fidesz, Boldog István, called the posters “provocative” and vowed not to consume Coca-Cola until they were removed.

An online petition calling for the boycott Coca-Cola has attracted 50,000 signatures. In its description the petition states, “Until now, large companies in Hungary have not advertised with openly gay content and messages. Do not be illusory, this is a test,” a translated version of the petition states.

“If Hungarian society accepts this, there will be more and more steps. Posters, commercials, films, rainbow products, etc. And as we continue to slide down the slope, it will become increasingly difficult to stop.”

I am so ashamed and disgusted. 🤧 🤮

The reaction from the pseudo-Christian - non democrat ruling party's MP is not surprising, our govt has been a closeted homophobe, as it were,  for more that 10 years now (see my earlier post about the Speaker of the H. Parliament calling gays 2nd rate citizens and comparing gay marriage and adoption with paedophilia).  Their usual strategy is to put forward a "politician" from the second or third rank of the party that would say or do something outrageous. Then the pro-govt media (these days about 90% of the country's media) would produce something along the same line.

In this case the portal pestisracok.hu wrote: ""Those who think the homosexual lobby will, for some unexplainable reason, stop at the Hungarian border are wrong, there is a well-identifiable, foreign-funded circle that ceaselessly works to upend our society's gender norms." Fearing for the "unsolidified sexuality" of Hungarian children, they wrote: ""Of course it doesn't spread through convincing! Just look at it in the underpasses, the streets, possibly everywhere, get used to it, so you don't flip out when your child is defiled by some middle-aged pedo."  This article went on railing about how homosexuals are, by default, few and far between, and therefore, they need ad campaigns to "expand the homosexual meat market" with impressionable teenage boys, and that big companies are eager to lend them a hand in that.

This is the govt's way of testing the waters, to see how people would react. Then somebody from the government would say something cynical, like "oh, it's not the government's position", "we have nothing to do with it" or, in this case, "Hungary is a free country, you are free to drink Coke or anything you want" .

This particular MP (István Boldog) was the one who, on his FB page,  posted a picture of a dead pig with the word "SOROS" branded on its side. This was in the middle of the govt's anti-Soros (US-Hungarian-Jewish billionaire and philanthrope George Soros) campaign, which was criticized  by international Jewish organizations for its antisemitic tone.

The central element of PM Orban's (who is the undisputed lord and master of his party and his govenment) rhetoric is "war". "We" have to fight against the left, the liberals, against the EU, migrants, the UN, the media, or Martian invasion. These days the opposiotion is weak and fragmented (although there are some positive signs),  there are hardly any refugees on the border;  the EP election did not produce the expected result (the eurosceptic-nationalist breakthrough), making Orban's position in Brussels rather precarious, so they have too find a new enemy - homosexuals. I am certain that in the near future we will see anti-gay legislation of the Russian sort (Orban is a super fan of Putin).

At the same time research suggests that homophobia has actually been decreasing for years now.

One factual correction, if I may: the online petition has "only" cca. 37 000 signatures.

Update: Coca Cola Hungary is replacing  the contested ads. The company insists it has nothing to do with the negative reaction. The campaign was designed for the duration of the Sziget Festival (its motto for 2019 being "Love Revoluition"), and with the end of the Festival the campaing also ends.

@majikthis I'm not that familiar with marriage equality and support of homosexuality in Europe.

Would you say that most countries in Europe are against gay rights? Or are they in support?

Within the EU , theoretically all countries support gay rights. 16 (15 w/o the UK) member states legalized gay marriage (strangely enough Catholic Spain was among the 1st members to do it) , the rest have registered partnerships. So from a legal point of view everything is more or less OK, although the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights in its 2015 report I came across says that important issues relating tho LGBTQ people's enjoyment of their fundamental rights have not yet been addressed at EU level (as the Employment Equality Directive deals only with  employment issues). Other areas, like access to services, education, housing, social protection are regulated at a national level, which means that countries have different approaches and regulations.

The main problem here in the former Soviet bloc is public acceptance, and the rise of populist nationalism (or neo-fascism, as an analyst called it). In Hungary the government and the state-controlled media increasingly copy the Russian anti-gay propaganda, and it obviously influences public opinion (especially in small communities, where the main source of information is state media). Only yesterday in a village disco a teenage girl (straight)  was beaten up for carrying a rainbow-patterned bag; a few months ago the neo-nazi party screamed bloody murder because a kindergarten had rainbows painted on its fence.
