1271419-11-20191209123411.jpeg  Just one of several controversial sweaters which got pulled from the Walmart Canada site (and the only one the article I read showed).

@anubis : I can often be dense and overlook the obvious, but what in the world is so "controversial" about the sweater?  Is it Santa's (?) bizarre face?  Or just that it shows a Santa-like figure at all, instead of a generic winter figure or scene?  Is there something obscene or offensive about the illustration? 🤔

Granted, the sweater is a major fashion violation, even by straight standards.  But since when has Walmart been fashion-conscious?

The lines of cocaine are what make the sweater controversial, @JackFTwist. Snow is a slang term for  cocaine, so basically the sweater depicts Santa urging people to snort coke.

Frankly I think it deserves to be banned more for its sheer ugliness than any allegedly pro-drug message, but that's just my opinion.

I am not sure - I think the three white stripes in front of the South-Park-esque "Santa" , and Santa's huge pupils might refer to cocaine, also known as "snow". But ye gods, that is one ugly sweater.

And so is this Walmart gem:

Aha!  Thanks, lads.  As I said, I can often be dense and overlook the obvious, and that interpretation of the sweater would never occur to me.  Coke isn't something that I would normally think of when I'm focused on what seems to be a winter or Christmas context.

So I suppose the straight object the figure is holding in his right "fist" is a straw of some sort?

I agree with your fashion assessments, as noted in my post, but then fashion has never exactly seemed to be Walmart's forte.

LOL, I had to look up "mondaine."  It wasn't in either of the first two dictionaries of American English that I checked, and my computer's spellchecker objects to it, but fortunately it was in my dictionary of the Mother Tongue.  See?  AM is so much more than a porn site.  It's an educational site, too!  643155224_RollingEyes.gif.fbd85998ae70794994525003632b0924.gif

This is undeniably true -- although I should mention that I have long been on very familiar terms with good ol' Santa Claus. You won't believe some of the things I've done with this North Pole, not to mention his snow balls. It's a shame he can only cum once a year.

As for the elves -- well, what can I say except good things come in small packages.

And yes, Santa serves up some great coke. Why, after a few hours of snorting the stuff, you wouldn't believe Rudolph's nose. Very shiny. You would even say it glows.

The reindeer does indeed look rather gloomy. I think this young man should be forced to remove the sweater at once -- along with his jeans and underwear, just to be on the safe side.

@majikthis Hmmm ... further consultation and study of dictionaries has revealed that the (British) English spelling "mondaine" is actually the feminine form of the original French word, which makes it a strange choice of spellings.

Also, "mondain/mondaine" has several different senses in French, depending on its context.  Used as a noun, it means a society person, and one of its senses as an adjective is in the same vein (e.g., pleasures of society life, polite society, fashionable, etc.), which is consistent with its English meaning.  But in another context, it means mundane, earthly, or worldly (in the derogatory sense).  Which of these meanings do you see applying to @tj10017 ?

All definitions apply. I can be as worldly and sophisticated as a Mondaine watch or as crass and vulgar as a Walmart sweater. Hell, sometimes I might even wear a Mondaine watch with a Walmart sweater. I'm a Gemini -- it comes with the territory. That's why sex with me is like having a threesome!

Well, I don't speak French, but the (English) dictionaries I checked (Collins, Merriam-Webster) simply say:

M-W:
Definition of mondaine (Entry 2 of 2)
mondaine adjective
: worldly, sophisticated, fashionable

Collins
adjective
2. characteristic of fashionable society; worldly

Anyway, @tj10017 seems to be happy with any definition we throw at him. :m0154:  It might be the coke he snorted with Rudy.

Yes, I should've clarified that it was my French dictionary (Collins) that showed all these distinctions of "mondain/mondaine," depending on the context.  I was particularly struck by the ambiguity of its sense of "worldly."   I.e., in some contexts "worldly" means mundane, earthly, etc., while in others it denotes sophisticated, cultured, and so on.   The definitions you cited clearly mean "worldly" in the latter sense.

In any event, I wasn't sure which sense would apply to @tj10017 , or whether, as you astutely observed, he'd likely be happy with either of them.  I'm still gobsmacked by his brilliant and quick-witted sidesplitting replies above:

Very apropos the "What Made You Laugh Today" topic!  He should be head writer for "Saturday Night Live" (and they're in desperate need of one, IMHO) or one of the late-night comedians, like Colbert.  He's definitely out of my league, and I shall have to steer a wide course around him.  And, indeed, doubtlessly,
