One year later we won’t forget the 49 that were taken way too soon, and the tragedy too. They were taken by hate.

A year later and it seems like yesterday. Never will forget that horrible massacre or the hatred that motivated it.:tw_cold_sweat: Rip to all the innocent people who unnecessarily lost their lives.

It both angers and saddens me that there are people who are twisted enough to think that because they disagree with a person's beliefs or lifestyle that that gives them the right to harm others.  I was sickened when I first heard of this incident and the brainwashed loser who carried out this act.  Nothing gives anyone the right to harm another person in this country without due process.  Period!

I'll be honest guys.  This is what scares me most about Sharia law getting a foothold here.  This mindset is perverted and very dangerous!  There is a reason that Iran claims there are no gay people there.  They either murdered them all or scared them into silence, and these lunatics want to bring this crap to our shores!  It should be a wakeup call to the LGBT community here.

My two cents.

I agree with this.

Hooooooold on.  I'm rather alarmed by this statement, because I have never once ever thought that America would be 'taken over' or even infringed by a supposed encroachment of Sharia law.  If anything, America has always maintained a Judeo-Christian intersection in our society and politics.  What would ever cause you to say such a thing?

In general - and I'm not speaking to any one person - it's statements like this that I think speak to the weakness, fear, and paranoia of a certain segment of America.  And that's unfortunate.  It's not a statement of strength.  We have fundamentally sound institutions.  Let's not forget that America was fundamentally founded on the expression of religious freedom with the founding Quakers and Puritans.  We have survived waves of immigrants over the 200+ year history of America, whether it be Irish, Jewish, or Asians.  There will always be the xenophobic clamor and scary jingoism of people too afraid to believe in our own institutions, when instead we should believe in the fundamental strength that our American democracy can survive by showing the very best of what we have to offer.

@JoelR — Very well said.   “Sharia law” is a red herring used by hate mongers to stir up the xenophobia, jingoism, fear, and paranoia that Joel referred to.  Those who are seriously concerned about sharia law “getting a foothold here” should stop and think about how laws must be passed in every single jurisdiction in the U.S. — federal, state, and local.  All laws in our legal system must receive a majority of votes in some established governing body, like a city council, county board of supervisors, state legislature, or the U.S. Congress.  (Depending on where you live in the U.S., the exact names of local governing bodies may differ from the examples I’ve used.)

How many of those legislative bodies are likely to have a majority of members who would support imposing sharia law?  It’s conceivable, although highly unlikely, that Muslims might win a majority on the city council of a small town, but it’s not at all clear that a majority of U.S. Muslims would even favor imposing sharia law on themselves, much less on their fellow citizens.  It’s definitely unlikely that U.S. Muslims could ever gain a majority in any state legislature, much less in the U.S. Congress.   So basic civics demonstrates that there’s no governmental mechanism that could impose sharia law in any civil jurisdiction in the U.S.  (Alas, most high schools have long since dropped courses in civics or government from their curricula.)

Fear-mongering on this topic is nothing more than a deceptive hoax or distraction designed solely to stir up irrational fear and distrust of the followers of one particular religious faith.  U.S. history contains several examples of this type of religious paranoia:  the Salem witch trials, persecution of the Mormons during the early years of that denomination, distrust of Roman Catholics and Jews, etc.  The sooner that anti-Muslim rhetoric and behavior joins those other examples in the dustbin of history, the better.

Wow!  What a lively discussion!

Ok, the point I was trying to make was to simply to voice a personal concern of the horrible events taking place overseas making their way over here.  If it came across as fearmongering, that wasn't the intent.  I have several good friends of all faiths, including Islam.  One of which recently became a US citizen and is very proud to be so!

I'm a big believer that anyone who wants to come to America to live the dream and become a productive member of our society should be welcomed with open arms!  You're right, Joel, one of this country's greatest strengths is indeed its diversity.

Regarding our institutions, they were designed with the proper checks and balances, are indeed stable, and will remain to be so as long as people like us stay involved, educate themselves and participate in our processes!  It's so very important that we all do so!

Happy 4th everyone!

Spoken like the @tbill we know and love!  And I neglected to mention that your original post was absolutely right about wakeup calls to the LGBT community.  Our Trans brothers and sisters have been particularly prominent targets lately.  (Which reminds me, time to renew my HRC [Human Rights Campaign] membership….)

I stumbled across this YouTube link today and thought what better topic (besides politics) is more American than baseball?  So I thought I'd share this classic comedy skit with you guys in the spirit of the 4th.  Please enjoy....

Go 'Stros! 😉
