update on my progress at the gym

hey gang, it`s been a while since i could think of something to talk about. one of my good friends at the gym, gave me some advice, and told me what he did to lose weight and build muscle. he suggested having the last meal of the day at 7pm, going to bed at 9pm and getting up at 5am. after a few days of thinking about as i didn`t want to go to bed that early, i revised his schedule so that my last meal was at 10pm, i went to bed at 12am, and got up at 8am. this did help a little as i started sleeping better, but as for the weight loss, it wasn`t much help.

then i thought about about a 2 months ago, i started getting 15,000 steps in a day. seeing how easy it was, and with not too much more effort than getting 10,000 steps in a day, i decided to keep it up. one day while telling one of the gym`s personal trainers about it and showing your my progress on the fitbit app, she noticed fitbit was also recording calories burnt. she knew what i was trying to lose weight and asked what i was eating on a daily basis. i told her about 4 meals a day. i gave her an idea of what was on each plate, and she did a guesstimation on how many calories it was per day, and told me i was eating more calories than i was burning.

she suggested cutting out one eal each day, and for my last meal, no carbs. i followed her advice, and in less that 5 weeks i dropped 22 pounds. following the advice of both these people, i was getting better rest, i was eating better in regards to weight loss, and i was getting better gains in the gym. i have so much energy now, i am all but bouncing when i got for my walks to and from the gym.

i recently moved to a new home, filled with great people who seem very supportive of my efforts. i have been several new friends as well. you could say i was living at home, although it was one of my sisters homes, not my mom`s. every time i told them about my achievements i got looks of attitude and rolling eyes, like they didn`t give a fuck. plus her eldest son was a real asshole. so i knew i needed to get the fuck out of that negative environment, now i am much happier, and have positive support both at home and the gym.

getting back to the weight loss thing, i am 19 pounds from my goal weight of 244 pounds, but i am thinking of going a little lower, like to around 235 pounds. the way i am losing weight now, that shouldn`t take too long to achieve. i figure by Christmas, i`ll be wearing a sandwich board so people can see me, LOLOLOL!!! see image below, in case you`re not sure what a sandwich board is. with love from Wes!! hugs!!!

Congratulations, Wes! :wow:I am happy for you, buddy.

I know next to nothing about fitness thingys, diets and stuff, but about a year ago  I saw a documentary on the BBC ("Trust Me, I'm a Doctor" series) about a research  suggesting that workout might be more effective for men if they eat before workout (and for women if they eat after workout). I have tried to find the episode, to no avail. Anyway, here is the link to the series, there are many useful tips and a ton of info on a variety of topics: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/3rPBmcgXQf8qmlNkTbbQVg9/issues-covered-in-the-programme

Wes, if you wear a sandwich board, people won't be able to see too much of you. Unless the board is made of some transparent material. Why don't you try some thongs or a jockstrap instead? Although Canada at Christmas might be a wee bit cold to walk around in  skimpy underwear. Long johns?  🥰

PS Let me blow my own horn a bit, though. After  I quit smoking about 7 years ago, I grew a bit of a pouch (if that is the correct word, in Hungary we call it a "life belt"). Funnily enough, that's all that happened - the fat just accumulated around my waist, but nowhere else (thank the gods for small miracles). So a few months ago I got fed up with it and started doing regular abs workout at home - planking, sit ups). And lo and behold, I can see my abs again (and I can wear my favourite pants!). Not a six pack just yet, but slowly getting there! 💪

Wes, my sweet and caring friend, loving oneself (or rather loving oneself in the right way) is not vain. All great spiritual traditions say that in order to learn to love others, first you must learn to know, to accept and to love yourself - both the good and the bad. It is not easy, I know from experience.  I know you are not religious, but that doesn't mean you can't learn from these traditions. Just avoid modern "self-help" books.

In Buddhism (I am a Buddhist) Mettā , or loving-kindness is one of "the four immeasurables" (the other three being compassion, empathetic joy , and equanimity) that have to be developed on one's journey towards enlightenment. There is a simple but powerful meditation to cultivate mettā. And it starts with oneself:

"May I be happy, may I be free from suffering
May I be free from enmity and danger
May I be free from mental suffering
May I be free from physical suffering
May I take care of myself happily ... "

And then this is extended first to people you love (family, friends, significant others), then to neutral people, and then to people you dislike. And finally to all sentient beings in the universe.  The idea is that as you learn to accept and love yourself, you also realize that others have the same desire to be happy, to be free from suffering. And from this realization come the  love and compassion towards others. This is (imho) the actual meaning of the famous "Love thy neighbour as thyself".

As the 5th century master Buddhaghosa says:

"But if he develops (loving-kindness/ mettā) in this way: “I am happy. Just as I want to be happy and dread pain, as I want to live and not to die, so do other beings, too,”  making  himself  the  example,  then desire for other beings’ welfare and happiness arises in him. And this method is indicated  by  the  Blessed  One’s  (the Buddha's) saying:I visited all quarters with my mind/ Nor found I any dearer than myself;/Self is likewise to every other dear;/Who loves himself will never harm another.  So he should first, as example, pervade himself with loving-kindness. "

And three more quotes from other traditions

"Find the love you seek, by first finding the love within yourself. Learn to rest in that place within you that is your true home." (Sri Sri Ravi Shankar)

"Your task is not too seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it" (Jalal ad-Din Rumi)

"We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create." (John Lennon)

Hugs,

Majikthis

You don't want to eat or snack for several hours before bed, as that allows for the food to be digested and your body's metabolism to slow down.

I'm a big snacker myself, so one thing I've learned is to keep several options available like celery and almond butter, granola, yogurt, popcorn, dark chocolate, and salted nuts. My snack cupboard sometimes has more food than my fridge LOL.

I do the same thing - although I am somewhat partial to salty nuts ...  :t2808:

Congratulations, Wes! Good to hear that your hard work is paying off. Are you going to post some before and after pics once you reach your goal? That would be great to see!

hey tj, it never occurred to me for the first year and a half to take any pics at all!! i hate having my pic taken. but on the advice of a fellow friend at the gym, i started taking progress pics back in June of this year. i`ll show you the difference between a pic from June to a pic from about a 3 weeks ago. i am totally embarrassed that i let myself go this far, but you can bet i am working my ass of to make things right. my last weigh in had me at 260 pounds. i have lost 25 pounds over the last 5 weeks and maybe a few days more. with love from Wes!! hugs!!!

this was taken back in June, 2019. you can see the love handles hanging over the top of my shorts

20190616_214915.thumb.jpg.8d0ed126004864e4eb4720637f39f4db.jpg

this was about 3 weeks ago. you can see the love handles are almost gone, and the fat is losing its structural integrity and is starting to hang. it almost looks like a balloon that someone stick a pin in so the air could escape slowly. i did have a pic of me holding my gut in, but i must have deleted it. it shows how small my gut is really getting. i`ll include one next time i take progress pics.

Twenty-five pounds in five weeks? That's amazing. You'll have your bikini bod by Christmas!
