Interesting question Tomster.  Making me think (always a good thing)... I can't think of any covers offhand that I prefer to the original (but then sometimes you just don't know a particular song is a cover).  I did like the Sound of Silence cover  you  put above though.

I can however think of several covers that I don't like at all!  I really like Kate Bush "Hounds of Love" but all the covers I've ever heard I think are terrible...

hey Tommy, i cannot remember a time with a remake of a song i liked was better than the original!! like you i have songs that strike an emotion, reminds of a something in my past, or touches my heart in a way, that makes me weep!! most music has me weeping, which is why i prefer to listen to music when i`m alone. i don't want to have people around asking me what the matter is, when there's nothing wrong. i`m just moved by the music is all!! with love from Wes!! hugs!!! 

I once said to someone music and songs are like a time machine... they can take you back to a place in time with people and memories better than almost anything I can think of. I make part of my living in the music business... but on a personal level of all the arts it has always touched me the deepest and most profoundly.

Showing my age here, but...

The Gladys Knight and the Pips version of I Heard It Through the Grapevine was fine...but the Marvin Gaye cover a year later is probably better remembered.

I'd be less certain about, but maybe advocate for, the Vanilla Fudge much-much-slower version of the Supremes' You Keep Me Hangin' On.  (Actually, that one I go back and forth on.)

Oh, I am also a talented singer. Under the shower. Maybe we should do a duet?

Jeff Buckley's cover of Hallelujah is nice (probably the best remake/reinterpretation of LC's most famous song I've heard), but let's be honest, nobody can beat Leonard Cohen. The song needs Cohen's deep, raspy voice to work. (The worst cover of the song I've ever heard was by a Hungarian woman at the Xmas concert of a large "born-again" Christian community last year. They probably thought it was a religious song.... )

I don't watch talent shows, but on the net you occassionally find little gems. Hearing Brian Justin Crum singing Radiohead's Creep (America's Got Talent 2016) sent shivers down my spine. I like Radiohead and all, but Brian's cover is IMHO better than the original. (Him being a handsome gay man helps. This vid is also proof that even cute young hunks look a bit silly in skinny jeans )

Ecactly the same happened to me listening Mimi & Josefina cover of the same song. (The Voice Kids of Germany).
